Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.
Information Technology is divided into four sections: Enterprise Applications, Railroad Applications, Network Services and Systems Development.
The Enterprise Applications team is charged with implementing and supporting applications used enterprise-wide at Metra, such as the new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and HR, Payroll and Timekeeping systems.
The Railroad Applications team is charged with implementing and supporting applications used to support Metra's Transportation, Mechanical, and Engineering functions.
The Network Services section has two distinct groups: IT Support and Network Operations. IT Support maintains and supports the agency's personal computers as well as computer aided design (CAD) systems for the Engineering Department and point-of-sale terminals. Network Operations builds and maintains the servers and storage that are replacing the agency's mainframe, the data network, e-mail system and disaster recovery capabilities.
Systems Development develops, maintains and supports all application systems built in-house, across all business functions.
Reporting directly to the Manager, Network Services, the Senior Systems Engineer will install, maintain, and monitor servers, storage area networks, Cloud environments, and software for Metra's computer network; analyze service options, infrastructure configurations, and ongoing support requirements to improve system reliability and maintain operations metrics; and maintain infrastructure equipment with current vendor support agreements.
The primary duties include provide levels 2 and 3 support for multiple technologies, primarily: Microsoft Windows servers 2012 and 2016; Microsoft Exchange 2016, Endpoint Security, and Office 365, and Windows 10; and Administration of Cisco interfaces to server environment.
Provide levels 2 and 3 support of Microsoft Azure/AWS Cloud, and Active Directory including: creating, updating, and configuring of domain owned objects and operations.
Provide levels 2 and 3 administration of VMWare vSphere 6.7 infrastructure including: hardware installations, software server deployments, and systems updating.
Configure, deploy, and maintain a High Availability environment to ensure an uptime of 99.9%.
Collaborate with colleagues to automate management tasks, streamline processes, resolve complex issues, and manage and maintain backup/recovery systems data.

1.) Bachelor's degree in a computer related discipline OR in lieu of degree, any combination of education and experience may be substituted for the required degree that equals four years in in Microsoft Windows system administration.
2.) In addition to #1, must have eight years of Microsoft system administration experience that includes levels 2 and 3 Microsoft server technologies.
3.) Must have experience managing Microsoft 2012/2016 servers and exchange email servers, and in developing backup strategies for these systems.
4.) Experience managing large scale technical projects including enterprise level Storage Area Networks.
5.) Considerable knowledge of:
- Microsoft server technologies including configuring managing and troubleshooting Exchange servers.
- VMware and Hyper-V virtualization technologies as well as Microsoft OS version 10.
- configuration and management of Cloud technologies including Microsoft Azure, Active Directory, and AWS.
6.) Good knowledge of:
- Cisco network infrastructures and how they interrelate with servers and storage desirable.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 Administration.

8.) Skill in configuring Microsoft servers (Exchange, Azure, Endpoint, Active Directory).

11.) Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
