GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT


Responsible for nutritional assessments and implementing a plan of nutritional care for specialized ambulatory populations, based on identification and assessment of a patient's nutritional needs, correlated with other health plans. Requires strong interpersonal and interviewing skills for competence in both clinical and managerial areas. Requires leadership in a variety of settings and formal and informal teaching to medical students, house staff, nurses, dietetic interns, and allied health personnel. Serves as a resource person in area of specialization for the hospital and community. This position is located at Brigham and Women's Hospital's main campus.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Clinical Responsibilities



  • Maintains excellent rapport and effective working relationships with physicians, nurses, managers, and administration. This includes regular communication to patient care staff about nutritional problems which may affect a patient's response to overall medical care and management, discussion with healthcare providers about research trends, etc.

  • Build rapport and maintain effective relationships with patients and families. This includes being non-judgmental and using interpersonal skills to connect with patients, providing them with care that is comprehensive and evidence-informed.

  • Interviews ambulatory patients and families to assess and evaluate social, financial, environmental, and medical factors impacting nutrition status; review patient information obtained from medical records, and/or health care providers, to determine patient needs.

  • Counsels ambulatory individuals and groups in specialty area with varied nutritional needs, taking into consideration diagnosis, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds. Uses behavioral and attitude change treatment modalities.

  • Develops nutrition care plan utilizing clinical, biochemical, socio-economic, and psychosocial factors. Documents and communicates nutrition care plans through written and verbal systems (medical records, discussion at rounds or patient conferences). Documents in record based on established standards of practice.

  • Interprets, evaluates, and utilizes pertinent current research related to nutritional care, and presents such at team conferences or MD correspondence.

  • Collaborates with inpatient dietitians re: patient referrals; discharge and continuing care plans.

  • Participates in patient satisfaction and problem solving with nutrition and customer service issues.

  • Serves as a nutrition consultant, resource, and lecturer for health care providers, students, and the public.

  • Performs other duties as requested by management staff such as patient check-in at off-site clinics and calling patients to address concerns and questions.


Management Responsibilities:



  • Collects and reports productivity, clinical outcomes, and other data that is necessary for quality improvement and reports to Manager of the Nutrition and Wellness Service.

  • Submits patient charge information to ensure accuracy in billing.

  • Performs other duties, including administrative duties, as requested by management staff.


Educational Responsibilities:



  • Develops and presents group education classes, in specialized areas to hospital staff, professional organizations, the community at large, media and/or contract institutions.

  • Develops and expands professional proficiency in selected or assigned areas of specialty (example: diabetes, obesity, radiation therapy, surgical gastroplasty, infectious disease, cancer, bone marrow transplant, gastroenterology).

  • Participates in mandatory hospital in-services (OSHA, safety, respiratory, fire, confidentiality).

  • Registered, licensed Dietitian

  • Master's Degree strongly preferred

  • 2-3 years related experience in the areas of clinical, community and educational dietetics.

  • Fluency in Spanish and English required.
