Job Title: Staff Accountant
Reports to: Chief Financial Officer
Summary: Assists in various areas of the Accounting and HR departments to complete regular tasks as well as special projects.
Assists the Accounts Payable Clerk in processing the company's bills by entering payment information into computer financial system and contacting other employees to obtain information necessary to process payments.
Assists the Payroll Clerk in processing payroll by helping with the entry of weekly time records, assisting employees in answering questions about pay and benefits, and helping to correct errors in timesheets.
Assists the Chief Financial Officer to complete monthly reporting activities such as reconciling bank accounts, updating financial software system, generating reports, and preparing journal entries.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an emphasis on customer service and marketing the company. Ability to speak clearly and articulately and to use proper grammar.
Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy and discretion in business dealings and with staff as well as work in a cooperative team-oriented environment. Ability to maintain cordial relationships with vendors and subcontractors.
Ability to maintain a good attendance record.
Demonstrated competence in MS Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook and Access. Ability to develop and use complicated Excel spreadsheets.
Accuracy and attention to detail as necessary to detect errors and correct them.
Excellent organization skills as needed to stay on task and to maintain a schedule for making timely payments and running processes.
Good math skills, and the ability to apply them to the work. An understanding of the theory and practice of accounting such as would be obtained through college courses or experience.
Proficiency with computer accounting systems and an understanding of how they operate.
Data entry skills, with the ability to keyboard at a speed of at least 60 words per minute and to operate 10-key pads by touch.
Organizational skills, time management skills and attention to detail.
Education and Experience:
Graduation from a college-level program in accounting and at least three years of experience in a role in a finance office using a contemporary financial accounting software system.
Sitting is required for the majority of the day, although sitting and standing may be varied as necessary for comfort. Fine finger dexterity is required for use of a keyboard and other office machines. Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.
Work is primarily performed in an office environment.
