Summary


This position is located within a Hospital or Health Center in the Billings Area Indian Health Service, Dental Staff Department. Incumbent reports to the Supervisory Dental Officer or Designee.

Responsibilities



  • Make clinical and radiographic examinations of the oral and soft tissues and a diagnosis of pathological or irregular conditions.

  • Administer local anesthesia, and/or nitrous oxide analgesia.

  • Perform routine and moderately complicated tooth extractions, including surgical procedures.

  • Perform examinations, make diagnoses and prescribe treatment plans for patients.

  • Recognize and refer patients for specialty treatment as required.

  • Examine, diagnose, and treat diseases, injuries, and malformation of teeth and gums.

  • Plan and carry-out dental health programs for oral disease prevention and patient education.


This position will support the Federal Government's response efforts to COVID-19.

Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Qualifications


To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Degree and License Waiting Period for Impending Graduates: The Hiring Manager/Selecting Official may elect to utilize an available flexibility wherein applicants who are currently enrolled and expected to complete the required education and obtain the required licensure within 9 months of applying, may be deemed tentatively qualified. Applicants who have not completed their education requirements (but who are within the established timeframe for qualifying) must submit:

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):


Applicants who meet the basic requirements qualify for the GS-11 grade level.


Education: Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (external link) (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (external link) (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.


Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (external link) (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (external link) (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.


In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below to qualify for GS-12.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


GS-12: Applicants must complete a 2-year residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science; OR equivalent experience identified on your resume that must demonstrate one or more full years of experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing professional dentistry work for GS-12 level. Qualifying experience involves the evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. Examples of dentistry experience may include the removal of decay; filling cavities; straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth; treating gum diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth, administering anesthetics, writing prescriptions; and performing other requirements of the position.

  • Pediatric Dentistry

  • Periodontics

  • Prosthodontics

  • Endodontics

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology

  • Dental Public Health


For the above specialty areas, experience, education, board certification, and/or training must clearly establish the applicant's status as a specialist. Agencies should review the applicant's experience to determine the types and difficulty of the cases dealt with, the level of knowledge and understanding of the specialization regularly required, the extent of diagnostic skills and treatment planning ability involved, and the pertinent graduate study acquired.


Medical Requirements: Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color.
