In this article PRN member, physician, and author Dr. Kathleen Rokavec discusses the ability for doctors to use their existing career investment time and apply it in new directions.
“Do you love your job? I mean really LOVE your job. Do you wake up on Monday morning energized and excited about getting to work and starting your day? If you inherited a billion dollars, would you continue to do your job?
If so—you don’t need to be reading this article. Chances are, most of you either dread Mondays, or just tolerate them. But we are doctors—what else are we going to do? We have spent most of our lives training to be doctors. It’s too late to start over, isn’t it?
In his new book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell talks about the “10,000-hour rule.” His research has shown that few people get to the top of their game without at least 10,000 hours of preparation. Heck, I think I did that in the first week of residency! The point is—we don’t have to start over—we can use our education and experience to move in a new direction.
So – with that in mind, we already have well over the minimum investment of time…we just need to change how we use that investment. Just as you would sell a stock or fund that had not done well and re-invest it into something more profitable. Now, with our careers, money shouldn’t be the prime motivator for changing careers. We can make good money. Figure out what aspect of medicine you still enjoy. It might be writing, speaking, teaching, or even reading (oh, yes, you can even make money reading). You might even consider a career coach to help you find you passion…but it will be well worth the investment.”
