PT. Hatfield Indonesia is seeking to hire a national expert for the position of Marine Biodiversity Specialist based out of our Bogor office to help us build a sustainable future for our company and country. The ideal candidate is expected to provide a suitable level of technical competency on the subject area(s) for which you are responsible including assistance to project managers for project implementation and client liaison. Responsibilities for this role include supporting proposal development, project implementation, and may include coordination and supervision of other staff and/or sub-consultants. As part of your responsibilities you will also support marketing and business development activities with the purpose of developing new opportunities for the company. The candidate must be proficient with national regulations and international guidelines and standards. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess excellent project management and communication skills and you may be asked to assume some management responsibility, at the project level, as a project manager or assistant project manager.

The employment term is 12 months with a possibility of extension.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct marine biodiversity and ecological assessments, including marine and coastal baseline surveys, habitat and species assessments, and ecosystem services studies, serving as a field team member or field coordinator as assigned by the project manager and/or project director.
  • Implement field surveys in marine habitats and contribute to design of sampling programs and sampling methods including, but not limited to, determining sampling locations, survey methods, field documentation development, and data analysis, equipment installation and field logistics arrangements.
  • Responsible for data management during field work, which includes, but is not limited to, compiling the data survey results; i.e., tally sheets, observation sheets, questionnaires result and photos, checking field data for completeness and consistency, organizing hard copies and uploading soft copies of all data (and datasheets) to appropriate data storage areas after every field program, and proceed analysis of preserved samples.
  • Conduct data analysis on biological field data, which includes relevant analysis related to species identification, species screening based on conservation status, habitat type and threat identification, research on species or habitats of concern, and calculating relevant biodiversity indices and statistics.
  • Manage project team activities including preparation of project work plans, schedules, budgets, technical activities, and coordination of technical staff and sub-consultants to ensure efficient use of corporate and client resources, preparation and editing of documents (e.g., proposals and reports).
  • Implement a robust QA/QC process in every project step (e.g., data quality, preparing workplan, data compilation, and literature review) to meet the project scope of work and PTHI standards.
  • Carry out every task given by always prioritizing occupational safety & health, security, confidentiality, and being environmentally friendly.
  • Apply the Hatfield style or other style guide required for each writing contribution.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary and multicultural teams to successfully deliver project activities, technical outputs, and project objectives.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in environmental management, marine, fishery, biology or a relevant field. A Master’s degree from a reputable university will be an advantage.

  • Minimum five years of professional experience undertaking marine biodiversity-related assessments and studies as part of environmental and social assessment processes, including AMDAL, UKL-UPL, Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP), and Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD).
  • Experience in planning and conducting marine biodiversity baseline surveys, data collection and management, habitat and species assessments, species identification, and statistical analysis and interpretation of marine and related ecological datasets.
  • Experience with biodiversity safeguard documents relevant to marine and coastal environments as part of the biodiversity impact assessments, critical habitat assessment (CHA), ecosystem services assessment (ESA), biodiversity management plan (BMP) and biodiversity action plan (BAP) would be an advantage.
  • Experience in delivering marine biodiversity projects in accordance with international environmental and social standards and safeguards, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards and World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF), particularly IFC PS6 and WB ESS6, and their associated guidance documents would be an advantage.
  • Experience working in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork, and an ability/interest to work in the field is preferable, occasionally in remote locations for extended periods of time.
  • Holding a valid AMDAL team member certificate would be an asset
  • Holding professional SCUBA diving and rescue certification would be an asset.

Other Assets/Skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as independently, sometimes remotely for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to support business development and marketing activities, entrepreneurial skills and mindset would be an advantage.
  • Ability to travel to project sites, sometimes to remote areas, across Indonesia.
  • Ability and willingness to learn on the job, multi-task, willing to travel frequently on short notice.
  • Analytical skills and the ability to provide sound judgement when problem solving.
  • Think innovatively, effectively, and critically to provide optimal work results.
  • Strong attention to detail, ethical standards, and oriented with a high level of integrity.
  • Computer skills required: MS Office, MS Excel and Statistical Software. Skills in GIS will be advantageous but not necessary.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication in Bahasa Indonesia and English (oral and written – technical and scientific writing).
