JOB DESCRIPTION
We are looking for an experienced CNC Machinist who can perform set-ups and operate a variety of lathes, mills and drilling machines to perform assigned tasks: read prints; understand tolerances; read micrometers and calipers. The machinist needs to possess skills in operating both manual and CNC machines with an eye for detail and accuracy with a keen interest in production and processing. They must also have good interpersonal communication skills, physical stamina and knowledge of mathematics and mechanics as well as respect for safety precautions.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
- Operate and setup various CNC and Manual – turning, milling, and drilling machines to assure quality parts produced in a timely fashion.
- Understand process improvement, component identification, material identification and inventory awareness.
- Reduce lead times by following Preset & Set-up processes.
- May set-up, operate, and maintain drill press, and turret lathe.
- Work from production orders to perform designated operations.
- Maintain acceptable quality and quantity levels.
- Assist with bar stock put away, cut bar stock materials, clean parts, separate and maintain waste chips & daily scrap levels.
- Process all necessary adjustments to machines. (Including Offset Wear & Geometry) - Maintain coolant levels and oil levels on all machines.
- Follow work order, blueprint and standard instructions during machine set up.
- Change collets, tool inserts, tool blocks and tool holders.
- Perform basic level maintenance on machines as directed.
- Enter programs for pre-programmed parts.
- Eliminate non-value-added activities.
- Maintain safe work environment by following company safety procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Configure machines by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs.
- Maintains specifications by observing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; editing programs; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
- Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample workpieces.
- Able to read and understand basic CNC part programs.
- Ability to perform quality checks using verniers, micrometers, calipers, ring and plug gauges, dial indicators and other measuring tools.
- Ability to change tools in the machine and input tool height measurements.
- Routine maintenance and cleaning of the machine.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Efficient - Able to work with minimal supervision and able to prioritize tasks and follow specified procedures.
- Review samples, drawings or instructions to understand specifications of output.
- Ability to hold tight tolerances during machining and assembly.
- Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job.
- Take measurements and mark material for cutting or shaping.
- Select appropriate machines (e.g. lathes) and position or load material for a job.
- Determine and program size of batches, speed of machine etc.
- Monitor machine while working to adjust the feed, maintain temperature and identify issues.
- Check output to ensure consistency with specifications and discard defects
- Keep records of approved and defective units or final products
PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
- 3-5 years’ experience in machine / mechanical workshops is preferred.
- Physical stamina and strength to lift heavy items
- Certificate in machine shop technology or machine tool technology/machinist.
- High school diploma or equivalent; completion of vocational training or an apprenticeship will be an asset
- Ethical behaviour.
- Ability to communicate in English, understand and follow oral and written English instructions.
- Attention to detail and self-motivation.
- Experience in a small manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Ability to communicate technical information effectively.
Qualifications
- Minimum High School certificate.
- Technical School Graduate or equivalent experience in an industrial manufacturing environment
- Basic computer navigation and utilization skills

- Specific technical or vocational training or certification preferred

Education and Experience:
- Four year Vocational/Technical School certification/apprenticeship program; or
- Five years experience machining; or
- Equivalent combination of education and experience; or
- Strong Mechanical Aptitude score.
